Even the title of this volume seems untranslatable. The word “Bildung” in German (the Austrian philosopher Konrad Paul Liessmann wrote a beautiful essay on this subject) does not exist in other languages. 'Education' is certainly the closest word in English, but it is not the same thing. “Bildung” does not only mean education, but something more: a formative and mental education that the word “education” alone does not contain. Several scientists and teachers in this volume wonder whether Cicero can be re-evaluated as an “educational” writer for the twentieth century.
