In these few pages, M. Adami would like to mention a volume (written largely in Italian) published in Freiburg by the Rombach publishing house, well known to philologists. The volume is entitled ‘Tradurre classici greci in lingue moderne’ (Translating Greek Classics into Modern Languages), the result of a significant collaboration between the University of Freiburg and Professor Matteo Taufer, president of the Trentino-Alto Adige section of the AICC. Perhaps the most interesting and fascinating essays concern verse XIII 158 of the Odyssey and how the meaning of this verse is misinterpreted in R. Lattimore's Anglo-American translation, which is very close to American thinking but not to Homer's ancient Greek thinking. Other topics include C. Pavese, his translations and how these translations also influenced his literary work, and Martin Heidegger and his vision of appropriate translation. Franco Ferrari focuses on the multifaceted term „οủσία” in Plato's writings and the difficulties of translating this word in different contexts. Bernhard Zimmermann deals with translations of ancient Greek comedies and some obstacles in interpretations and translations into German. Giuseppe Zanetto wonders whether it is possible to translate an epigram.
At the end of the volume, there is a fascinating essay on the Venetian publisher Aldo Manuzio and how he used Greek and Latin quotations in his private and public writings. It is a very interesting and important volume because it makes us reflect (in a very broad way) on a skill that is unfortunately becoming increasingly rare in our day, but which would be so important in order to manage different languages and understand each other.
