In 2019, North Rhine-Westphalia abandoned the requirement of a fixed error rate for translation assessment after almost 40 years. This led to fierce resistance from many subject teachers who feared a loss of professional standards. Now, in 2025, schools have been asked for the first time about their experiences with the new curriculum requirements in an exploratory qualitative study. This study provides information on whether Latin can be taught at school without counting mistakes. This essay follows on from the essay ‘Textverständnis bei Übersetzungsleistungen bewerten’ (Doepner et al.) in 'Ars docendi' 19/2024. It is to be expected that these two essays will act as didactic pacemakers in the field of translation assessment, which is not based on error counting. Doepner is a head of department at the Düsseldorf district government.
