Freydank (teacher in Meissen and lecturer at the TU Dresden) begins by describing the role that archaeology currently plays in curricula and textbooks for Latin lessons, namely that of merely illustrating the texts that are read in Latin. According to Freydank, however, this does not do justice to the social and political function of archaeology. This consists of the reconstruction and interpretation of artefacts in the systemic context of production, meaning and discovery.
